Wild blue berry picking (Bilberries) in Hvalfjörður

August 23, 2020

Wild bilberry / blue berry picking:

Seems to be a pretty traditional Icelandic pursuit to flock outside of Reykjavík in the last two weeks of August to pick wild blue berries. They are actually Bilberries but they look similar to blueberries and they are delicious! So grab yourself a large empty yogurt pot and follow the flow of traffic out of town. We went to Hvalfjörður. It was a lovely drive, great weather for a picnic and we all came home with purple fingers and full tummies. Nb. Make sure you go before the first frosts as this ruins the berries.
