In Laugardalur valley (hot spring valley) is Reykjavík Zoo and Family Park (Fjölskyldugarðurinn).
The zoo has all the Icelandic farm animals, reindeer, harbour seals and arctic foxes. There is also a selection of birds and foreign reptiles. Don't expect to see big hitting zoo animals like elephants, lions or tigers because there aren't any, but don't let that put you off going. It's a lovely little zoo - an ideal family day out.
The family park section is awesome! There is a mini-racetrack, child-size power diggers in sand, a pillow trampoline, boats and fairground rides for kids. The playground is well maintained with a pirate ship and a crooked house with slides and climbing features. There is a sand / water play area where you can make sand castles and dams and several picnic areas. Climb up the viewing tower and you get a great view!
There are ample toilets, a coffee house and kiosk that sells souvenirs and a selection of drinks. It's a brilliant day out!
Opening hours: all year round. Winter: 10am to 5.pm (24. August – 31.May) Summer: 10am to 6.pm (1. June – 23. August) Coffee house: 10am – 5.30pm.
Travel: The nearest bus stop is Laugardalshöll. If you are driving there is a large car park right next to the zoo which is FREE to use. If you are using the Hop on, Hop off the nearest stops are Hilton Hotel or City Hostel Laugardalur.
